How I Created A Direct Response Copywriting Service

I got into ‘direct response’ marketing in 1996.

It’s also known as direct marketing, internet marketing, digital marketing or simply mail order.

Things weren’t going too well at the time. My property company was in trouble. Hard to believe today, but interest rates were 15%! I was terrified I was going to lose everything I’d spent the last ten years building up. I had to find a new source of income. Fast.

Something that didn’t require much capital to set up.

While I was researching the direct-response ‘self-improvement’ niche, I kept hearing about a book called ‘The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches.’

Intrigued by the title I sent away for it.

The book (which is really more like a course) proved to be just the product I was looking for.

In case you don’t know, The Lazy Man’s Way explains how to develop the ‘millionaire mind-set’, teaches you the basics of copy writing and shows you how to set up and profit from a one person ‘mail order’ business. Don’t forget this was pre-internet, but it’s just as relevant today as it was then.

It impressed me so much I contacted the US author and licensed the rights to sell the book in the UK.

After a couple of disasters I managed to write a very successful sales letter.

Orders for the book flooded in and the cash they generated saved me from going under.

That was the start of my direct marketing business career.

I developed an entire ‘mail-order’ business selling similar ‘self-development’ books and courses.

Then I applied ‘direct response marketing’ to health supplements – I’m a bit of a health freak. I started my own brand of nutrition in 2002. It’s still going strong today and has provided a fantastic lifestyle for myself and my family. And it’s all down to the power of direct response copy writing.

I’ve continually studied ‘direct response’ copy writing over the last 20 years because in my opinion it’s the key to business success.

The better you are at writing ‘direct response’ copy, the more successful your business will be. I literally eat, sleep and breathe it. And I love teaching it to other copywriters and business owners or anyone who wants to start a business. Unless you’ve got very deep pockets there’s no better way to market a start up or small to medium size business.
